BAHAMAS AVIATOR NEWSFEED:
SOUTHERN BAHAMAS UP & RUNNING:
NEW YORK-Oct 15: Hurricane Joaquin has left a trail of damage, but ALL AIRPORTS are now open, and power has been resored to most South Island areas. Check with your resort/hotel first before flying in, but storm recovery work is proceeding quickly.
BAHAMAS ROCKED BUT NOT DOWN:
Hurricane Joaquin hammered the South Islands, but the the islanders show a spirit much tougher than a mere Cat4 hurricane. Bernard Ferguson of Tranquility Bay Resort in Crooked Island says: "Daphne and I are fine, we suffered some damage; but will bounce back better than ever." Michelle Williams of Riding Rock Resort on San Salvador said: "Yes indeed the storm was intense to say the least. I call it horrifying but thank God we all survived. The seawall held very well so there was no erosion, but the club house building took a beating. Echoing those words, Shavonne Darville of Gems at Paradise simply said: "Words can't express..." describing the storms intensity when passing Clarence Town. Most airports are now back open with recovery efforts well underway. Pilots wanting to get involved can visit the links below for recovery help and donations.
BAHAMAS IMPACTED BY HURRICANE JOAQUIN -Oct 2015:
The Bahamas suffered a major blow when cat4 hurricane Joaquin roared for 3 days over the southern "UP South" islands causing flooding and damage. San Salavador, Rum Cay, Crooked Island, and Long Island took the brunt of the slow moving storm. With a long history of dealing with storms like this, don't be surprised if everything is back up and running well before the Thanksgiving Holidays begin. Check ahead with travel plans, and consider lending a hand to our neighbor in need.

2015 LAKELAND, FL Sun N Fun Airshow
The Islands of the Bahamas sponsored the evening airshow, featuring the Aeroshell Flight team. Ellison "Tommy" Thompson was interviewed before thousands of airshow spectators. He made news by announcing an upcoming Bahamas Airshow in Freeport in 2016, and invited private pilots to fly their aircraft to the Bahamas Islands.
Guests enjoyed a catered, Bahamian Style dinner while watching the amazing airshow light up the night sky.
SAN SALAVADOR, BAHAMAS
The JPI 830 was getting my full attention as I heading offshore near KPMP climbing to 7,500. The IO360 had just been overhauled with about 8 hours so far. With about 450 overwater miles to go, watching the CHT temps rise and fall during engine break in was a bit nerve-racking. The Mooney was headed southeast to San Salavador Island, the furthest east you can fly in the Bahamas. It's out there, and you start to feel a little lonely by the time Cat Island is on your tail. The ever changing engine temps had me thinking about the legendary service record of my Lycoming engine...which I hoped to uphold this fine morning.
My mission was to shoot video for Riding Rock Resort, an inviting, well run family business. Customs was easy, but please note there is a new fee in place. You now pay a $50. “processing fee” when you enter the country, filling out the usual C7A form. On leaving you pay the $29. per person departure tax. That made the total customs cost for my solo trip $79.
Riding Rock Resort is located just yards from the airport, so I quickly checked in and learned I had to shoot a beauty contest that night. Expecting a somewhat modest event, I was surprised to experience a full blown production, gorgeous women, and a crowd going wild. I started to question if I was on the right island... It became a night to remember, with the stunning winner going to Nassau to compete for the Miss Bahamas crown. Read Full Story Here..
